As soon as someone learns that I work as a makeup artist for photo shoots and sports television, one of the next questions they ask is “Do men wear makeup?”. I know it seems ridiculous for the every day man to “wear makeup”. Yes! Men wear makeup and greatly benefit from having a makeup artist on set. And yes, makeup artists help men look their best on camera for tv, film, and photo shoots.
My approach is much different for mens grooming and it differs from traditional beauty makeup. It’s about evening out skin tone and blemishes, maintaining shine control, brightening the under eye area (when needed), hiding a recent sunburn, covering the occasional shaving mishaps, eyebrow grooming, & aiding with hair styling and the occasional haircut and trim. The reality is without having a makeup artist on set, it can become painfully obvious under bright studio lights how much a
makeup artists assistance is required. The progression of camera technology, high definition advances, and led lighting has created the ability to produce an incredibly sharp more realistic image. With that sharper image is where you start to notice things you might not have seen before, flyaway hairs, blemishes, uneven skin tone, perhaps you see that the talent appears to look like he didn’t get a full 8 hours of sleep, especially in the eye area. The technique for makeup application for mens grooming has changed with the advances in technology. It is a makeup artist’s goal for her men’s grooming work to appear natural and effortless. A good makeup artist’s work is virtually undetectable. You shouldn’t “see” the makeup, that means it is too heavy.
Seasoned pros know the value of mens grooming and how the time spent in the makeup artist chair benefits their appearance on camera. I will tell you, men don’t willingly sit in the makeup chair at first. A common concern I hear from men is that wearing makeup will make them appear feminine, as if I’m punching their “guy card” as soon as they sit in the makeup chair. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Once they realize how quick and painless the ordeal is, and no eyeliner or lipstick is involved, they usually put up less of a fight, especially once they see how great they look. Sometimes at the end of the shoot the talent refuses makeup remover wipes because they have an audition or on-camera engagement afterwards. The pros know to keep wearing the makeup if they are going to be on camera again.
People often ask me about skincare products, and what I personally use. They’re usually surprised when I tell them how simple my skincare routine is, and how affordable the products are. I read a book in my teens called “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me” written by Paula Begoun. The book was so informative about makeup and skincare, but also about the cosmetics industry. In the book Paula really cuts through the claims of cosmetics companies and various products. She explains the “smoke and mirrors” terminology cosmetic companies use in advertising in order to sell more makeup. For instance “reduces the appearance of wrinkles” doesn’t mean a product makes wrinkles fade or disappear. She has extensive research that covers ingredient breakdowns that are effective, and which ones are best to avoid. I loved her philosophy about every makeup line having some great products. You don’t have to spend a fortune on your makeup collection to look great. She defines what’s worth splurging on in the high end department store lines, and recommends items that you don’t have to break your budget for. I loved her philosophy and much of her advice I still carry with me today.
Paula didn’t stop at writing books. She developed an amazing skincare line that conquers every genre of skin concern you could be facing. She kept her philosophy of informing the consumer, and maintaining affordable prices. What you won’t see is expensive advertising for anti-aging creams with 25 year old models. I really stand behind her company’s mission, and I love the products. How many companies break down what each ingredient’s purpose is in the label and talks about stable active ingredients? When you order her products, you have the option to receive the most informative skincare catalog I have ever seen from a brand. Because the skincare line has so many options, ordering for the first time can be a little overwhelming. I’ve put together my Paulas Choice favorites list.
Resist Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser – I can’t live without this cleanser in my life. This is part of my daily routine. Typically I use this at morning and night. It’s gentle enough for my sensitive skin. It removes makeup, and hydrates my skin to that perfect glow. Here’s the product description from Paula’s site:

The Skin Recovery Mask is my remedy for parched dry skin in the Winter when my moisturizer isn’t cutting it. I have eczema and sensitive skin that doesn’t react so well to the drop in temperature. This mask can be worn for 10 minutes, or overnight. Immediately after using it I can feel the increase in moisture. The texture isn’t like most masks, it’s actually a very dense thick cream.
Resist C15 Super Booster
The Resist C15 Serum is another standout product for me. It does help with brown spots and evening up my skin tone. It’s the dose of Vitamin C and ferulic acid that my skin needs without the hefty price tag from department store brands.
This information is from Paula’s Site
What makes this product unique? Resist C15 Super Booster is a concentrated, light-as-water liquid treatment product designed to supercharge your Paula’s Choice serum, or it may be used alone. A blend of 15% stabilized vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) at a pH of 3.0, antioxidant vitamin E, ferulic acid, and peptides repairs visible signs of aging and stimulates collagen production for smoother, brighter, and firmer skin.
Vitamin C also helps protect skin from environmental damage as it evens your skin tone. You’ll see dramatically younger, healthier, and more radiant skin in weeks!
Who is this product for? The formula is suitable for all skin types and also appropriate for breakout-prone skin.
Resist BHA 9 I might have some considerable knowledge about skincare, but I’m still a victim to the occasional acne breakouts, blackheads, and clogged pores. Fighting acne has been a part of my life since I was a teen. Now I’m a grown up and that means I get to combine anti-aging along with my acne treatments 😉 Joking aside, some of the acne treatments help to exfoliate our skin, which not only fights acne but provides some anti-aging benefits as well.
What makes this product unique? Resist BHA 9 is a first-of-its-kind spot treatment specially formulated to address your most stubborn skin imperfections. The technology behind BHA 9 is indeed unique, allowing for a controlled, sustained release of salicylic acid without diminishing any of its effectiveness. In fact, you will have enhanced results without dryness or irritation! BHA 9 for Stubborn Imperfections has a pH range of 3.2-3.6.
BHA 9 can do all of the following:
Unclog pores with the first use
Diminish white bumps
Minimize enlarged pores
Refine and smooth skin’s texture
Minimize sebaceous hyperplasia
Smooth and soften dry, rough patches
Help balance oily skin
Fade red marks from breakouts
Who is this product for? Resist BHA 9 is designed for anyone who has struggled with stubborn skin imperfections who wants enhanced results over and above the treatments they’ve been using.
So those are my pro makeup artist Paulas Choice favorites. These are the products that I’m familiar with and have continued to order because I’m pleased with the results. If you order through this link you get $10 off your first order.
When I have someone in the makeup chair, people will try to sneak a peak or ask “So what is your favorite mascara?” If I had a nickel for every time I have been asked this…. My answer depends on what your expectations are for your mascara – length, volume, or separation. If you’re answer is yes to all of the previously mentioned, and you would like to keep it in the “Under $10 category”, my suggestion would be my current favorite drugstore mascara Prestige My Blackest Lashes. I like to give practical product recommendations for all budgets. I can’t bring myself to spend $25+ (on a regular basis) for a mascara that will be thrown away in a month. I keep my mascara supply fresh, in conjunction with always using disposable mascara wands to keep any contamination risk down.
Here is my before and after. I did curl my lashes before applying the mascara. The reason I love this mascara is how natural it looks while it adds major volume and length. Makeup artists don’t always pick the most dramatic mascaras because they can appear a little messy on camera. Clumps, specks and spider lashes aren’t so lovely on high definition video or in pictures. Fiber mascaras have a tendency to flake off throughout the day. Once your mascara has gone clumpy, there’s no quick easy resolution. So I tend to like mascaras that separate lashes but still look clean and natural should we need to zoom in for a close up.
At $6.95 this mascara is a steal. You can find My Blackest Lashes Mascara online at Prestige Cosmetics. If you would like to find this product in a store Ulta carries the entire line in store as well as online.
It’s always exciting going to set up in different Atlanta locations for the day. Recently I had the opportunity to work at Turner Field for the day. The pictures I’m sharing with you in this post are actually from a few different shoot days. It seems when I work at Turner Field, the weather is very cooperative. It couldn’t have been any more gorgeous the last time I was there. These days on set require a lot of walking and location changes.
I usually take a lot of pictures of set life and the locations where we shoot for the day. After years of being a makeup artist I don’t have many pictures of me working. I can admit to having several pictures of the back of my head, or of my arm sticking into a shot wielding a makeup brush or taming some flyaway hair. Most makeup artists and fashion stylists are used to this. When we step into a frame we are facing the talent which means our backs are to the camera. When a test shot gets taken I cringe. We were shooting in the Braves dugout. On this day I was lucky that a member of the crew snapped a great shot of me working.
Turner Field is an amazing location in Atlanta to film at. Over the course of 12 years of being a makeup artist in Atlanta. I’ve worked on many shoots at “The Ted”. I was allowed to set foot on the grass during a shoot one time. The grounds crew is always present. They work very hard to keep the field beautiful. If you’re shooting there, don’t step on the grass. Don’t even think about walking on the grass. Don’t look at the grass, I’m just kidding. They crew is always there doing a great job. Whether it’s January or August, the diamond always looks fantastic.
I have to give a special thanks to Chip Caray and Joe Simpson. They are the tv broadcast announcers for the Braves. They were so kind to take a moment of their busy time to pose for this shot with my son. This was a great day for him not only to visit the announcing booth, but as my son put it “He had the Braves Turner Field experience of a lifetime”.
Makeup primer, I frequently get asked about primers before foundation. Are they necessary? What is their purpose? Which one is the best? Will it work for oily skin? Will it work for dry skin? Will it make me look 15 years younger? To answer the last question, no it will not take 15 years off of your appearance. What it will do is makeup your makeup last longer, soften fine lines, minimize pores, keep your foundation and concealer from settling into lines, and provide a smoother surface to apply foundation to.
Priming your skin before putting on foundation isn’t required. I do highly recommend wearing primer if you’re interested in minimizing pores, smoothing lines, and increasing the longevity of your makeup. Primers provide a barrier between our skin and our makeup. It is disappointing to spend extra time putting your makeup on in the morning only to find by lunch your efforts are disappearing and melting fast. Have you ever felt like it’s especially difficult to keep your makeup on in the summer? Primer will definitely help you maintain your makeup wear longevity.
I have found a need to apply less foundation when a primer is used. As much as I love makeup, I don’t like seeing people go overboard with foundation. It’s actually a makeup artist pet peeve of mine. When it stops looking like skin, it’s too much. I have witnessed a lot of heavy coverage foundation when it wasn’t necessary. Foundation does serve a purpose of evening out our skin tone, but too much can actually work against us trying to achieve an attractive look. Primers help to smooth out our skin tone and reduce the appearance of pores. With using a primer it’s very possible you will find yourself using less foundation because your skin is already improving in appearance.
